I just got back from the Richmond Phil concert. This is Andre Gaskins-- he was our guest cello soloist, and he is beyond brilliant. He has studied with the legendary Janos Starker at University of Indiana. His sound is, to use a cliche, like butter. I have heard a lot of cellists in my time, many of the greats--Rosti (yes, live), Yo-Yo, Bonnie Hampton, Heinrich Schiff, Lynn Harrell.
Andre has that kind of monumental, important sound--enormous, like falling into a big vat of cream.
....undetectable bow changes.
Here he is warming up to perform the Haydn D Major Cello Concerto--I was nervous about asking him for a photo, but he was very accommodating. I thought it was funny that he was warming up in street clothes, and I think it's noteworthy to see the sorts of warm-up spaces artists have to use on occasion--an office, a bathroom, a storage closet, a hall.

He is also a conductor. He was also nominated for a Grammy.
In short, he is the schizznizzle.

Gee--I thought I replied to this:
Thanks for your kind comment! I LOVED your intperetation of "Doorway"--brilliant, actually....
I looked at your blog and found it so clean and easy to read that I spent the past few days trying to convert mine to Minima. It was tricky!
Thanks again!
